Cartapesta: Carnival of Fano - The Movie (documentary feature), and Papa Carlo Theatre (special screening short)

It doesn’t get any more special than Papa Carlo Theatre, directed by Rao Heidmets. It’s an animated film made with stop-motion and puppetry that was nominated for the Cannes Palme d’Or in 1989. Rao’s film Idyll won Best Short Film and Best Animated Film at last year’s Membrana Film Festival, and it gives us great pleasure to honour Rao’s career with this Special Screening. This film serves as a dark, allegorical satire of totalitarianism, exploring a bleak world where the puppeteer is also a puppet.

The documentary feature film Cartapesta: Carnival of Fano - The Movie is definitely one to be seen on the big screen, and it’s the perfect way to end this year’s festival. This happy documentary about the oldest Carnival in Italy is very cinematic, with a strong narrative and beautiful cinematography. Director Andrea Lodovichetti’s graduation short film, Sotto il mio giardino (Under My Garden) won the Italian Golden Globe, and the Looking for Genius Award, presented by Spike Lee at the Cannes Film Festival. Andrea also worked as Assistant Director to Paolo Sorrentino on 2 of his films.
