In the early 1990s, a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a small NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip-hop, and graffiti, they created art that directly reflected the lives they were living. With almost no ties to the “established” art world, this community forged an entirely new visual language—one that would go on to reshape contemporary art and influence pop culture around the globe.
Beautiful Losers (2008), directed by Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard, documents this cultural shift with rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and a vibrant look at the artists who grew from underground scenes to international recognition. Celebrated for its raw honesty and heartfelt storytelling, the film captures not only the rise of a movement but the friendships, ethos, and DIY spirit that fueled it.
Featuring key figures in urban and street culture, including Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Harmony Korine, Barry McGee, and Margaret Kilgallon.
The film’s score is composed by Money Mark (of Beastie Boys fame), adding an energetic and soulful backdrop to the artists’ stories.
