Make A Scene Presents: Victor/Victoria

Make A Scene Film Club presents a true icon: Victor/Victoria—the Oscar winning 1982 musical comedy that said "what if Julie Andrews was a woman playing a man playing a woman?" and goes for it!

Directed by Blake Edwards, best know for the Pink Panther films this gloriously tangled farce is set in 1930s Paris a world of smoky cabarets, tuxedos and rigid gender expectations where Andrews' down on her luck Victoria can't get a job as a singer (the most unlikely part of the film...cause Julie Andrews is such a terrible singer, right?) so becomes Victor the world famous female impersonator and her new drag persona Victoria because the toast of the town!

Decades before conversations about gender and performance went mainstream, Victor/Victoria was already there sipping champagne, smiling knowingly and daring audiences to keep up.

At the centre is Julie Andrews, giving one of the sharpest performances of her career—effortlessly funny and devilishly sexy as both man, woman and drag queen! She’s joined by James Garner delivering peak “straight man in existential free fall” and Robert Preston radiating charm, warmth and queer elder energy. The cast plays the escalating identity chaos perfectly, letting the film be silly and surprisingly tender at the same time.

Victor/Victoria is the pinnacle of the creative partnership between Edwards and his wife Julie Andrews that consistently pushed against her squeaky-clean image. Just a year earlier they shocked audiences with S.O.B., including Andrews’ famously controversial topless scene. Victor/Victoria isn’t just a fun camp classic—it’s a bold, joyful act of reinvention for Andrews.

Come for the jokes and musical numbers, stay for the gender chaos and leave wondering how a movie this playful managed to be this far ahead of its time.

All of our screenings are 18+ unless otherwise stated, and the film start time is as advertised above.
