Kai-June: Pacific Rim
Influenced by the Japanese Kaiju monster movie sub-genre, Pacific Rim was a natural choice for a director who regards the 1966 classic The War of the Gargantuas as a formative cinematic experience. A passion project for del Toro, it’s an underrated entry in his body of work, and essential viewing on the big screen.
It charts humanity’s last attempt to build robot behemoths capable of fighting giant creatures from another dimension. When colossal, interdimensional monsters called Kaiju emerge from the depths and devastate cities across the globe, the fight back is led by equally vast mecha robots called Jaegers. As the Kaiju threat grows even greater, the future of humanity could rest with a traumatised former Jaeger pilot and his tenacious superior officer.
With stunning action sequences, nostalgic nods to the giant movie monsters of old, and a big heart at its mechanical core - that will leave your inner child grinning from ear to ear.
