Sozzled, endearingly inept private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is forced to join forces with two-fisted thug Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star in the smoggy Los Angeles of 1977. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.
The Crowe-Gosling chemistry is great. Gosling, in particular, shows a real prowess for physical comedy. From fumbling a gun, cigarette and a magazine on the toilet to falling over a balcony trying to impress a party girl, he’s a clowning, comic delight.
This is a brash, bruising thriller that blends slapstick comedy, withering wisecracks and nasty violence to outrageously entertaining effect.
