Millennium Actress
Acclaimed director Satoshi Kon brilliantly blurs memory and fantasy in this epic adventure of fate and the magic of film.
The critically acclaimed film follows a filmmaker, Genya Tachibana who begins work on a documentary about famed Japanese actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Now well into old age, Chiyoko has become reclusive and shy about any publicity, but she eventually warms up to Tachibana and starts to relay her life story. As the decades pass, Chiyoko is transformed from a teen with big dreams into a full-blown celebrity, while her cinematic characters span various eras, from ancient Japan to the distant future.
Kon’s second feature-length film and first original work, Millennium Actress is also his last movie directed using hand-drawn animation’. Most of the scenes are based on his own layout, and act as a way for the director and his audience to construct and enforce a connection to the history of cinema in Japan through a unique, world-bending perspective.
