For the second evening of our season, Outside In brings Sunderland based Ice Swimmer Becca Harvey to Manchester. The evening will feature a screening of the award winning film 'Ice Mile', followed by a talk and Q&A session by the star of the film herself - Becca Harvey.
The Ice Mile is a film showing both the beauty and adventure in outdoor swimming – chasing those lower temperatures in the cooling winter, community, pushing distance and the body to its limit. It views Becca over the course of a year, following her journey and her training, documenting what it takes to consider an Ice Mile. It takes us through the beauty and the harshness of UK landscapes through the exploration of bodies of water, celebrating our natural spaces – from mountain tarns to the ocean that surrounds us.
Becca is an ice swimmer and swim guide based in the North East. She first found the water by trying to find an alternative medicine for her PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). She found when submerging in cold water she couldn’t think of anything else other than how blimmin’ cold the water was. It became her sanctuary and that reminder (that we all need sometimes) that we can do hard things. Since then she’s completed an ice mile, competed at various ice swimming championships and now helps others find a love of open water. Becca wants to help share the magic of cold water, not for a time or a race, but just another reminder of the world around us and the type of adventure we can find right here in the UK.
The Ice Mile premiered at Kendal Mountain Festival 2022, winning the Silver Best Film Award at SHAFF 2023, as well as Silver in the Women in Adventure Category, won Silver Award for Best Film at Type 2 Fun Film Festival, and has been selected for numerous film festivals around the world, including No Man’s Land, London Mountain Festival, and other community screenings across the UK. The Ice Mile also has a feature in Sidetracked Magazine, with the icy waters of the Cairngorms making the cover of volume 26.
