On Sunday 20th April, Fumetti Funnies invites you to take a few hits from stoner cinematic history at our FIRST ANNUAL 4/20 CELEBRATION, and to mark the occasion we're putting on a double-bill of two favourite Mary Jane movies at CULTPLEX!
First, we'll be sparking up with a classic of the genre: HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (2004). Feeling faded after a casual sesh, and inspired by an ad for White Castle (an American fast-food chain), accountant Harold (John Cho) and wasteoid Kumar (Kal Penn) embark on an odyssey to feed their cravings and, hopefully, survive the weekend! A prime example of the Gross-Out Comedy trend, particularly popular with audiences during the 2000s, Harold and Kumar bring a uniquely loveable quality both as space-out leading men and unwitting guides to a post-9/11 American fever dream.
Then, we're passing the blunt to Gregg Araki's SMILEY FACE (2007). Meet Jane (Anna Faris), a perpetual slacker who loves nothing more than hanging out and firing up her bong. That is until eating her psycho roommate's batch of cupcakes leads her on a series of misadventures involving a hemp festival, a sausage factory and the original copy of The Communist Manifesto! A rare opportunity to see this whacked-out consumerist satire from one of the 21st century's great queer auteurs (fans of THE DOOM GENERATION and MYSTERIOUS SKIN take note!)
