My pretty pretty, enter the Mathmos and slink into your spacesuit for this knowingly camp sci fi classic that took the swinging sixties sexual revolution into outer space and beyond.
In the 41st century sexy astronaut Barbarella (played with a wink by Jane Fonda) is sent by the President of Earth on a top-secret space mission to track down a rogue scientist Dr. Durand Durand (who the 1990s band was named after - fun fact), who has disappeared with his deadly invention, the positronic ray, a weapon capable of destroying humanity and disrupting peace across the galaxy! Dum dum deeeerrr!
On her travels, Barbarella’s dodgy crashlanding spaceship leads her through a series of surreal, campy and erotic adventures - from a jaunt to the subterranean sex mad city of Sogo, to an encounter with a hunky blind angel named Pygar, she joins a revolution, gets put in a giant orgasm machine, is fed to a massive lava lap and fights the villainous, sultry Great Tyrant played by 1960s icon and super model Anita Pallenberg. It’s a wild, trippy ride!
This mid-century gem has to be seen to be believed with hypnotic visuals, crazy sets and stylish space-age costumes…it is pure OTT sci-fi meets sumptuous Valley of the Dolls-style sex comedy, all sold with a nudge-nudge tongue in cheek quirkiness by pop culture legend Jane Fonda in the role that made her a super star.
Barbarella is a riot! The film is fun, funny, sexy, crazy…so we’re taking you to the far side of the universe and back with a Friday night party screening of this camp classic with themed cocktails, DJs playing outspace bangers and 60s hippy classics plus space lasers, games and hosting by Make A Scene’s Gary James Williams and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s Lill in full drag as Barbarella herself, performing live!
Dressing up is encouraged and rewarded. Come as a character from the film or your best 1960s space age inspired outfit. Prizes for the best dressed!
So join us for a little Barbarella psychedella, get far out and happening for a little trippy trip to outer space sixties style.
